L-arginine alpha-ketoglutarate studies
Pharmacokinetics, safety, and effects on exercise performance of L-arginine alpha-ketoglutarate in trained adult men.
Nutrition. 2006. Campbell B, Roberts M, Kerksick C, Wilborn C, Marcello B, Taylor L, Leutholtz B, Bowden R, Rasmussen C, Greenwood M, Kreider R. Exercise and Sport Nutrition Laboratory at the Center for Exercise, Nutrition, and Preventative Health Research, Department of Health, Human Performance, and Recreation, Baylor University, Waco, Texas, USA.
We evaluated the pharmacokinetics, safety, and efficacy of l-arginine alpha-ketoglutarate (AAKG) in trained adult men. In study 1, 10 healthy men (30-50 y old) fasted for 8 h and then ingested 4 g of time-released or non-timed-released l-arginine alpha-ketoglutarate. Blood samples were taken for 8 h after arginine alpha-ketoglutarate ingestion to assess the pharmacokinetic profile of L-arginine. After 1 wk the alternative supplement was ingested. In study 2, which was placebo controlled, 35 resistance-trained adult men (30-50 y old) were randomly assigned to ingest 4 g of arginine alpha-ketoglutarate (three times a day, i.e., 12 g daily. In study 1, significant differences were observed in plasma arginine levels in subjects taking non-timed-release and timed-release l-arginine alpha-ketoglutarate. In study 2, significant differences were observed in the l-arginine alpha-ketoglutarate group for 1RM bench press, Wingate peak power, blood glucose, and plasma arginine. No significant differences were observed between groups in body composition, total body water, isokinetic quadriceps muscle endurance, or aerobic capacity. L-arginine alpha-ketoglutarate supplementation appeared to be safe and well tolerated, and positively influenced 1RM bench press and Wingate peak power performance. L-arginine alpha-ketoglutarate did not influence body composition or aerobic capacity.

L-Arginine Alpha Keto Glutarate supplement questions
I have read information on L-Arginine Alpha Keto Glutarate from different websites. One site says, "Dramatically Increases Nitric Oxide Production For Increased Muscle Pump! AAKG is arginine alpha-ketoglutarate in a sustained release formula which is pH buffered to ensure maximum absorption. Arginine released into the bloodstream will dramatically increase nitric oxide production. An increase in nitric oxide may lead to the following benefits: extended and enhanced "muscle pump" after training, improved endurance and recovery time, improved workout capacity, and increased sexual vigor." Is this statement true?
A review of Medline in January 2010 did not reveal any human studies with L-Arginine Alpha Keto Glutarate supplements, therefore we think it is premature to make such statements. To enhance sexual passion, see Passion Rx formulated by a medical doctor.

Q. I am 21 years old, and I have been doing serious weight training since i turned 20 (I am a cage fighter as well) and have tried many supplements that boost nitric oxide levels. I get the great pumps and physical advantages of NO boosters like NO-Xplode, BUT it triggers a mental reaction akin to a horribly depressive bi polar episode. The more days in a row that I take the amino acid supplement, or NO-XPLODE, or whatever it may be, the more severely my mental state deteriorates. I have not been able to find any information of this happening to anyone else. Ever. The question is: Have you heard of this before?
   A. NO-Explode has many different amino acids and nutrients such as Arginine Alpha Keto Glutarate, rutaecarpine, trimethylglycine, etc. The dosages for some of these supplements is not listed. It is difficult to say which of these substances or which combination is causing the mood changes. Herbs and supplements are potent and misuse can have various mental effects. One option is to reduce the dosage or to take the NO-Xplode product less frequently.

Is it okay to take a creatine supplement along with AAKG?
As long as the dosage of creatine is less than 3 grams, we don't foresee any significant side effects. Taking more than 3 grams can cause nausea.
