Aspartic acid is an amino acid and one of the 20 proteinogenic amino acids, i.e., the building blocks of proteins. The carboxylate anion of aspartic acid is known as aspartate. Aspartic acid is also thought to play a role as an excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Glutamate, asparagines and glutamine are formed from their precursor, aspartic acid. It is one of the nonessential amino acids found in many proteins and closely related to asparagine. aspartic acid is used in medical and biochemical research, as an organic intermediate, and in various industrial applications. Aspartic acid is one of the two components of aspartame. Aspariginase is an enzyme that helps the conversion of asparagine to aspartic acid. Aspartame is composed of two amino acids, aspartic acid amino acid and phenylalanine, as the methyl ester.
